We took a brief pause last week, but we’re back! Thanks for your patience.
This week, we’re trying a Substack thread. This is a place for you (even if you are white, or non-Black) to share your reflections on Black History Month 2021 with February in our recent memory, and describe how you will hold yourself accountable for contributing to racial justice all year long. Consider this a “brave space,” and bring both your honesty and self-awareness.
What did you learn about Black history, art, or culture last month, either generally, or in relation to J-fashion and Lolita fashion?
What creators, brands, and works did you discover last month? How will you support them in 2021?
What else will you do in 2021 to honor and support Black lives, culture, creation and joy? If you are not Black, how will you do so without centering yourself or profiting from it?
Last month, as you can guess, I really enjoyed Marinakei's Frill Talk series. I've subscribed to her Patreon, and I think I'll spend some time this weekend catching up on episodes I haven't heard yet.
One thing I want to spend more time thinking about in 2021 is cannabis equity. In the (large, diverse) city where I live, there are no Black-owned dispensaries. I plan to follow a local organization that works on equity initiatives throughout the city, understand their recommendations, and take action.
I also want to understand how event planners can use social media ethically - stepping back from Instagram for PPC has brought me some clarity, and while these big tech platforms are good places to advertise cheaply, there's lots of potential for harm. What does a good process look like? How do we use social media to uplift the entire Lolita and J-fashion community - without propping white supremacy?
